Last weekend I realized what I hate about social media—and what made Steve Jobs so great.

Editing.

Jill Lepore’s 100th anniversary New Yorker piece about the history of the magazine’s editors emphasized something I’ve been thinking about a lot: the world currently lacks great editors. There’s too much stuff, and only the tiniest fraction of it is edited.

Which is hurting all of us because editing isn’t merely fixing grammar and making words prettier.

Editing is thinking. Editing is asking, do we need this? Is this worthwhile? Could this be clearer? Editing is being laser-focused on the so what and now what.

You know who was a master editor? Steve Jobs. He excelled at editing decision-making across disciplines, to enforce maximal focus to create something great.

We could all use more editing to make more magic happen.
